Tips and best practices to help you sell successfully

Creating Great Listings

  • Use clear, well-lit photos: Take photos in good lighting, from multiple angles. Show any defects or special features. Avoid stock photos or images from the internet.
  • Write detailed descriptions: Include species information, care requirements, condition, size, age, and any other relevant details. Be honest about any defects or issues.
  • Set fair prices: Research similar listings to price competitively. Consider condition, rarity, and market demand.
  • Update regularly: Keep your listings current. Mark items as sold when they're gone, and refresh photos and descriptions as needed.

Pricing Guidance

  • Research the market: Check similar listings to understand market prices. Consider condition, rarity, and local demand.
  • Factor in condition: Price items based on their actual condition. Be honest about wear, age, or any issues.
  • Consider bundle pricing: Offer discounts for multiple items to encourage larger purchases.
  • Be open to negotiation: Many buyers appreciate the ability to negotiate. Be flexible but know your bottom line.

Shipping & Pickup Best Practices

  • Offer multiple options: Provide local pickup, local delivery, and shipping options when possible. More options mean more potential buyers.
  • Pack carefully: For shipped items, use appropriate packaging to protect live animals or delicate plants. Research shipping requirements for your items.
  • Communicate clearly: Provide clear pickup locations, delivery times, and shipping estimates. Keep buyers informed.
  • Meet safely: For in-person transactions, choose safe, public locations. See our safety tips for more information.

Communication Tips

  • Respond promptly: Answer buyer questions quickly. Fast responses lead to more sales.
  • Be professional: Use clear, respectful communication. Answer questions thoroughly and helpfully.
  • Provide additional info: Share care instructions, breeding history, or other relevant details that buyers might want to know.
  • Follow through: Honor your commitments. If you agree to a price or delivery method, stick to it.

Building Your Reputation

  • Deliver quality: Provide items that match your descriptions. Quality listings and transactions lead to positive reviews.
  • Encourage reviews: After completing a transaction, politely ask buyers to leave a review. Positive reviews build trust.
  • Handle issues professionally: If problems arise, address them quickly and professionally. Buyers appreciate sellers who resolve issues well.
  • Build your profile: Complete your profile with a bio, photo, and location. A complete profile builds trust.

Marketing Your Listings

  • Use relevant keywords: Include species names, common names, and relevant terms in your listing titles and descriptions to improve search visibility.
  • Feature listings (coming soon): When available, consider featuring high-value or special items to increase visibility.
  • Share on social media: Share your Hobby Co listings on social media to reach more potential buyers.
  • Keep listings active: Regularly update and refresh your listings to keep them visible in search results.
